Quill + Chorus - October

Quill + Chorus

October

Hello, dear friends! It's finally October, and I'm welcoming the crisp air of fall and the smell of warm pumpkin bread.

I have an exciting announcement for this newsletter - I am taking submissions of artwork, poetry, and essays for Quill + Chorus!

Are you a teen who loves to write? Or do you know one who does? I am looking for teens to submit work to Quill + Chorus! You can submit poetry, artwork, and essays for the upcoming Quill + Chorus editions!

Please send submissions to bluebirdsandblackberries@gmail.com along with your name, age, and title of your work by the 25th of each month. I look forward to receiving submissions!

This month's musing is on adding in novelty into our lives. October is usually when my routine begins to feel tedious, and this year, I'm trying to plan for a few novel things a month - perhaps baking a new recipe or visiting a new place.

In light of this, this October edition has a theme of novelty and nonsense - perhaps we need just a hint of madness in our lives to prevent dull monotony.

This month's poem, Calico Pie, is a nonsense poem by Edward Lear. Our quote for the month is from Alice in Wonderland, a lovely, nonsensical book that is one of my favourites. The painting for this month is titled "The Painter at Tea Break" by Edouard John Menta, a French painter - it reminds me of the Mad Hatter's tea party in Alice in Wonderland.

Poetry

Calico Pie

By Edward Lear

Calico Pie,
The little Birds fly
Down to the calico tree,
Their wings were blue,
And they sang "Tilly-loo!"
Till away they flew,
And they never came back to me!
They never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back to me!

Calico Jam,
The little Fish swam
Over the syllabub sea,
He took off his hat
To the Sole and the Sprat,
And the Willeby-wat,
But he never came back to me!
He never came back!
He never came back!
He never came back to me!

Calico Ban,
The little Mice ran,
To be ready in time for tea,
Flippity-flup,
They drank it all up,
And danced in the cup,
But they never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back to me!

Calico Drum,
The Grasshoppers come,
The Butterfly, Beetle, and Bee,
Over the ground,
Around and around,
With a hop and a bound -
But they never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back!
They never came back to me!

Quill + Chorus November Hello, dear friends! It's finally November and I am looking forward to my upcoming Nutcracker shows! I've been so busy with rehearsals but I've loved learning new roles and choreography. I'm also starting to think about making Christmas presents - handmade things take time! Let me know what some of the best Christmas gifts you've made are, because I need ideas! This month's poem is by one of our wonderful teen poets, Ansley Ward. It reminds me of Smaug, the dragon in...

Quill + Chorus September Hello, dear friends! Although it's already September, it is still hot enough to feel like summer where I live. We've been savouring our last few dips in our neighborhood pool. I've been working on some new, exciting projects for Bluebirds and Blackberries, and I can't wait to share them with you soon! You can catch a few sneak peeks on my IG stories ☺️ This month's poem is by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It calls to mind the ripening of autumn and windswept, cooler days....

Quill + Chorus August Hello, dear friends! Happy August! Summer is winding down for us and we are starting to get back into our school routine. I came back so inspired from the CMI Joy of Making Conference last week, and I am excited to start implementing some of the ideas into my day. This month's poem is "If" by Rudyard Kipling. I like this poem because it is a good reminder of the virtues one should cultivate throughout one's life. The musing for this month is on reading Shakespeare with a...
