Quill + Chorus - July

July

Hello, dear friends! Summer has burst upon us in an effusion of heat and sun. I have sought refuge indoors, and profited by reading two Dorothy L. Sayers mysteries - Gaudy Night and The Nine Tailors. Are you acquainted with the Sayers mysteries? If so, do you prefer them to Sherlock Holmes? Personally, I prefer the Sayers mysteries, as I find Lord Whimsy to be a more amusing and vibrant persona than Sherlock.

I have some exciting news for this month! I will be speaking at the CMI Joy of Making Conference in Wilmore, Kentucky on July 27th!

Will you be there? Reply to this email and let me know - I would love to meet you in person!

This month's poem, "Summer Sun" is by Robert Louis Stevenson. I love his poems for their ability to transport you to another, quieter world. This one seemed especially appropriate for July's hot weather!

I haven't written a musing for this month since I have been occupied working on my speech for the conference, so the next Musing will be for August!

Poetry

Summer Sun

By Robert Louis Stevenson

Great is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven without repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic spider-clad,
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles,
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy's inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.
